چکیده
Reconstructing and designing media with continuously-varying refractive index fields remains a challenging problem in computer graphics. A core difficulty trying to tackle this inverse is that light travels inside such along curves, rather than straight lines. Existing techniques for make strong assumptions on the shape of ray medium, thus limit themselves where deflection relatively small. More recently, differentiable rendering have relaxed limitation, by making it possible differentiably simulate curved paths. However, automatic differentiation algorithms underlying these use large amounts memory, restricting existing small low spatial resolutions. We present method optimizing both accounts paths has small, constant memory footprint. adjoint state derive set equations computing derivatives respect field optimization objectives are subject nonlinear tracing constraints. additionally introduce discretization schemes numerically evaluate equations, without need store trajectories significantly reducing requirements our algorithm. technique optimize high-resolution variety applications, including creating different types displays (multiview, lightfield, caustic), gradient-index optics, reconstructing gas flows.

GPU-Based Nonlinear Ray Tracing
In this paper, we present a mapping of nonlinear ray tracing to the GPU which avoids any data transfer back to main memory. The rendering process consists of the following parts: ray setup according to the camera parameters, ray integration, ray–object intersection, and local illumination. Bent rays are approximated by polygonal lines that are represented by textures. Ray integration is based o...
متن کاملRay Tracing of Nonlinear Fractals
We present a new kind of parametric Lindenmayer-systems called nonlinear CSG-pL-Systems, which are useful for the modeling of nonlinear fractals and fractal like objects. Nonlinear CSGpL-systems describe cyclic CSG-Graphs, which can include several nonlinear transformations. To render the given objects a ray tracing algorithm is introduced, that is independent of the transformations and the und...
متن کاملRay-tracing and Interferometry in Schwarzschild Geometry
Here, we investigate the possible optical anisotropy of vacuum due to gravitational field. In doing this, we provide sufficient evidence from direct coordinate integration of the null-geodesic equations obtained from the Lagrangian method, as well as ray-tracing equations obtained from the Plebanski’s equivalent medium theory. All calculations are done for the Schwarzschild geometry, which resu...
متن کاملA ray-tracing operator and its adjoint for the use of GPS/MET refraction angle measurements
The development of small, high-performance instruments to receive Global Positioning System (GPS) signals has created an opportunity for active remote sounding of the Earth’s atmosphere by radio occultation techniques. A prototype demonstration of this capability has been provided by the GPS Meteorology (GPS/MET) experiment. Although it was shown that high vertical resolution profiles of atmosp...
متن کاملRay Tracing Height Fields
We present a novel surface reconstruction algorithm which can directly reconstruct surfaces with different levels of smoothness in one framework from height fields using 3D discrete grid ray tracing. Our algorithm exploits the 2.5D nature of the elevation data and the regularity of the rectangular grid from which the height field surface is sampled. Based on this reconstruction method, we also ...
